President Hage Geingob said Africa must stand together to bring about total economic independence aimed at improving the living standard of its people through socio-economic transformation.

Speaking at Zambia’s 58th independence celebration in Lusaka on Monday, Geingob said African countries stood together and prevailed the scourges of colonialism and racism, which should therefore translate into freedoms such as economic prosperity, as outlined in Agenda 2063’s theme; ‘The Africa we Want’.

Geingob noted that freedom and independence should drive Africans to collectively achieve sustainable economic development, stressing that Africans are their own liberators and should, together, hold the future in their own hands.

“Together, as free people, let us hold hands and march towards our common destiny. A destiny of shared prosperity and economic emancipation. We must be the authors of our own history and the navigators of our own destiny,” he noted.

Geingob said Zambian people opened their homes and hearts to Namibians during the apartheid colonialism, where Swapo had set up the Nyango Health and Education centre, which catered for close to 5 000 Namibians, as well as the United Nations Institute for Namibia (UNIN), which was opened in Lusaka to provide training for Namibians.

“UNIN opened the doors to so many peerless administrators, who have formed the core of the Namibian governance architecture for over three decades. For this reason, Namibia shall always be indebted to the brotherly and sisterly people of Zambia for their unwavering solidarity and kindness,” he noted.

Zambia is commemorating its 58th independence anniversary under the theme ‘Promoting Inclusiveness Towards a Sustainable Social and Economic Recovery’.
