Namibian wrestler Jason Afrikaner was on Friday eliminated from the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, after losing his 65-kilogramme quarterfinal fight against George Ramm of England.

To reach the quarterfinals of the men’s 65kg category on Friday, Afrikaner got a bye in the group stages.

After a two hour delay at the wrestling courts in Coventry due to safety procedures, the Namibian wrestler stepped into the ring against Ramm and the home favourite started the fight in attack mode as he scored most of his points in the first round.

In the second round, Afrikaner tried coming back into the fight but his opponent’s tactics were good enough to prevent the Namibian athlete from scoring a single point, leading to him losing the fight 0-7.

In an interview with Nampa after the fight, Afrikaner said he did not enjoy his opponent’s negative style of fighting.

“My opponent caught me in the first round and he scored all his scores, but I did not like his tactics because they were too negative and I wasn’t prepared for that,” he said, adding that his last competitive fight was in January this year at the African Championships and coming into the competition he did not have preparation fights for match fitness.
