Agribank should engage farmers more often: Amutenya

Paulus Amutenya who is the advisor to Olushandja Farmers Association chairperson SylvanusNauyango said,Agribank should visit farmers more often to acquaint with the farmers situation instead of calling only when they are in arrears.

Amutenya said this during a recent visit to several farmers in the northern regions by the bank's board of directors and some members of senior management as an annual stakeholder engagement strategy.

He said the bank should visit farmers every now and then to see for themselves the harsh reality on the ground to understand farmers needs, because the only time they get in contact with their clients is only when they are looking for what is owed to them to fill up their loan books.

I want the bank to visit us more often and be close to your clients so you can understand our needs and challenges instead of only contacting us when we fall in arrears, said Amutenya.

Olushandja Farmers Association chairperson SylvanusNauyango said, stakeholders should start to treat agriculture as the backbone of food security as it got the potential to create employment to the masses.

If various stakeholders understand the importance of supporting small scale farmers, it will create a critical mass of produce that can ensure food security and employment creation in the country. Here at Olushandje, we work together as a group and help each other to grow and become better producers, noted Nauyango.

The visit was necessitated for the bank to familiarize itself with the situation its clients and potential ones are dealing and coping with the drought as well as generally understand their plans of surviving the dry season.
