Agriculture ministry contains foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Zambezi region

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry reported that 3 934 out of 4 125 cattle, 95 per cent, have received vaccination against foot and mouth disease (FMD) at Sigwe village in the Zambezi Region.

This follows the banned movement of all cloven-hoofed animals and their products within and out of the Zambezi Region after an outbreak of FMD was confirmed on 14 August.

Acting Chief Veterinary Officer in the ministry, DrAlbertinaShilongo in a media statement issued yesterday confirmed that the outbreak did not spread beyond Sigwe village after the ministry did surveillance rounds in the area within 30 kilometres of the village.

Nonetheless, the ministry is set to vaccinate 40 000 more cattle outside Sigwe village as per a cautionary method by Wednesday.

The outbreak was confirmed at Sigwe in the eastern flood plains of Zambezi, about 90 kilometres east of KatimaMulilo.
