The lifeless body of an Angolan national was on Saturday afternoon retrieved from the Von Bach Dam outside Okahandja.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha on Sunday told Nampa that the body was identified by close relatives as that of the 20-year-old Matias Kamvivanu.

According to Mbeha, Kamvivanu and another 18-year-old, also Angolan, on Thursday night allegedly travelled to Von Bach Dam with the intention to catch fish through the use of a fishing net.

During the setting up and stretching out of the fishnet, Kamvivanu allegedly drowned in the dam that night.

“His 18-year-old friend tried to locate him, but failed to find him as it was already dark,” Mbeha said.

He then reported the case to the Okahandja Police Station Friday at about midday, Mbeha added.

Police officers from Okahandja together with divers from Windhoek teamed up on Saturday morning to search for Kamvivanu’s body.

At about 14h30 on Saturday, his body was found underwater and it was retrieved, she said.

No foul play is suspected so far and an inquest docket has been opened at the Okahandja Police Station as investigations continue.
