Boy drowns in canal at Omusati

A six-year-old pre-primary learner from Onampila Combined School (CS) drowned in a water canal near Onampila village in the Omusati Region's Elim Constituency on Thursday.

Confirming the incident to Nampa on Saturday, Inspector Linekela Shikongo of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the region said the child drowned while attempting to drink water from the canal.

He was from school with his school age mate at the time he tried to drink water in the canal, but he unfortunately fell in and consequently drown, Shikongo explained.

According to Shikongo, the other boy (mate) went to report the incident to the elder learners who rushed to remove him from the canal water before he was declared dead upon arrival at the local hospital.

Police identified the deceased child as Michael Kasheeta Kwandu Uumati from Uukwadhudhi village in the Uukwambi Traditional district.

The next of kin are informed and his body is transported to the Okahao Police mortuary for a post-mortem, said Shikongo.
