Burg Street in Windhoek is renamed to Dr Theo-Ben Gurirab Street

Burg Street in Windhoek was yesterday renamed to Dr Theo-Ben Gurirab Street. In a speech read on his behalf at the event, President HageGeingob said the renaming of streets in honour of national heroes and heroines is important.

By erecting memorials and naming landmarks and streets after distinguished sons and daughters of the soil, the country help immortalise their names to ensure that their heroic feats and outstanding deeds are captured in time, to be remembered for millennia to come, he said.

Windhoek Mayor MueseeKazapua, who also attended the event, said the City of Windhoek has adopted a street and place naming/renaming policy to pay tribute to heroes and leaders who selflessly championed the struggle to liberate oppressed people across the world.

It is a well-known fact that the name Theo-Ben Gurirab stands tall in the annals of the history of Namibia's struggle for political independence and his name on the streets of Windhoek will forever inspire Namibians, he said.
