Kuala lumpur: Cambodia has expressed its approval of Thailand’s initiative to address the ongoing border issues through discussions scheduled to take place in Malaysia next week, as reported by a Cambodian defense ministry spokesperson on Friday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Cambodian Defense Ministry’s Undersecretary of State and spokesperson, Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, confirmed during a press briefing that Cambodia is receptive to Thailand’s suggestion for a General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in Kuala Lumpur. She articulated optimism regarding the potential outcomes of the meeting, emphasizing the belief that it will be both constructive and beneficial.
Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata also informed that Cambodia’s Defense Minister Tea Seiha, along with Thailand’s Deputy Defense Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit, are slated to participate in the forthcoming discussions. This meeting aims to address and resolve tensions that remain from past conflicts.
Further insights were provided by the office of the spokesperson for Thailand’s Ministry of Defense, which announced on social media that Deputy Minister of Defense Nattaphon Narkphanit had formally accepted Cambodia’s invitation for this special GBC meeting. In his acceptance, Nattaphon highlighted the mutual dedication toward peacefully resolving the security concerns along the border.
The historical context of these talks is rooted in the armed clashes that erupted on July 24 between Cambodian and Thai soldiers along their disputed border. A ceasefire was agreed upon by both nations on July 28, which has been in effect since midnight of that day. The upcoming meeting in Kuala Lumpur represents a significant step toward achieving lasting peace and cooperation between the two countries.
