The Central North Regional Electricity Distributor (Cenored) on Sunday held a groundbreaking ceremony to launch its electrification project at Kalkfeld settlement in the Otjiwarongo constituency.

The electrification project will see houses being constructed under the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN), electrified in the next six months.

President Hage Geingob who was in the area on Sunday did the official groundbreaking of the project, together with First Lady, Monica Geingos who is the Patron of the SDFN.

Both Geingob and First Lady did not deliver speeches at the event.

Speaking at the event, Cenored Board Chairperson, Moses Matyayi said the electrification project is aimed at benefiting 100 households at Kalkfeld at a cost of N.dollars 2.5 million, and it is to be completed within a six-month period from 26 March 2023.

Matyayi further promised to continue electrifying over 500 households this year in informal settlements of the Otjozondjupa, Kunene, Omaheke, Oshikoto and partly Omaheke regions where Cenored is tasked by the Government to distribute electricity services.

A member of the SDFN at Kalkfeld, Crizelda Isete on behalf of other beneficiaries thanked Cenored for bringing electricity to their newly completed houses, saying for the past four years some houses have been standing without electricity.

‘We urge other service providers to also come on board and channel water as well as the sewage network system so that we can own proper functioning houses,’ she said.

Otjiwarongo Constituency Councillor and Chairperson of the Otjozondjupa Regional Council, Marlayn Mbakera on her part announced that her office intends to upgrade the Kalkfeld settlement to the level of a village council.

“My office has plans to upgrade this settlement to a village council, as you might be aware, Kalkfeld in 1991 was proclaimed a village council, but it was downgraded to a settlement in 1996 due to a lack of development, infrastructural and economic growth,” she said.

Several other politicians from Otjiwarongo local authority and Kunene Region also attended the event.
