Chief Zeraeua tournament slated for weekend

The seventh edition of Chief Christian Eerike Zeraeua open tournament comprising of football and netball will take place at LL Mahoota and Maboke stadiums in Omaruru this weekend.

The one-weekend tournament will start on Saturday at 07h00 and is expected to end Sunday.

Nicky Musambani, one of the tournament organiser told Nampa in an interview on Thursday that the tournament which is aimed at honouring the late white-flag chief of Omaruru who passed on seven years ago.

Historically, this weekend is catered for the commemoration of our late chief and we have added these sporting activities to add sporting flavour to the main event, as our chief was a sports fan, Musambani explained.

He added that the competition will also keep the youth busy, exploring talent and promote sport in the country.

We have teams from as far as Opuuo, Oshakati, Otjinene, Karas, Windhoek, Gobabis, Khorixas, Mariental among others will play in this tournament and that is good for exposure, he emphasised.

The N.dollars 80 000 competition has attracted 30 football teams while netball teams will be drawn on Saturday in Omaruru.

Football teams will compete for N.dollars 50 000 whereas netball vies for N.dollars 30 000.

In the football category, the winner will pocket N.dollars 25 000, a trophy and 20 gold medals, whereas the runners-up will get N.dollars 12 500 and 20 silver medals.

The semi-final losers will each pocket N. dollars 6 250.

The netball winner will take home N.dollars 15 000, a trophy and 12 gold medals, while the runners-up will walk away with N.dollars 8 000 and 12 silver medals.

Each semi-final loser will take home N.dollars 3 500.

Windhoek-based Composite Depot football and netball teams won the competition last year.
