Colonel Chisozu Accorded Military Funeral

Katima mulilo: President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has accorded a military funeral to the late Lieutenant Colonel (honorary rank) Office Chisozu, who will be laid to rest on Saturday at the Kamenga Shrine, Singalamwe village, in the Kongola constituency of the Zambezi region. Chisozu, a prominent liberation icon, was born on 19 April 1935 at Libubu village in the Singalamwe area. He died on 20 October 2025 at the age of 90 years.



According to Namibia Press Agency, a media release by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology on Thursday announced that a memorial service in his honor will be held on Friday at the Singalamwe sports field. Chisozu left the country in 1968 to join the liberation struggle through Imusho, now Kamenga border, and was later taken by the Zambian government to the Mayukwayukwa refugee camp, from where he was taken to the Maheva refugee camp in western Zambia.



In 1972, Chisozu joined the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) while in exile and attended his first military training in Russia, specializing in infantry. Upon completion, he was deployed at one of PLAN’s military bases called Kaunga Mashi, which was under the leadership of the late Lieutenant General Dimo Hamaambo.



During the period from 1974 to 1981, he was deployed at the Eastern front in Zambia. In 1979, he was deployed to Kwasa-Sul camp. He was later posted at Nyango camp in 1985, where he served as a logistician.



Upon independence in 1991, Chisozu joined the Development Brigade Corporation camps at Omega, Nukwa, and Grootfontein until his retirement in 1994. He was honored with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and awarded a commendation medal and a certificate award of a Liberation Medal by former President Hifikepunye Pohamba on 26 August 2007.



He is survived by his wife, five children, 11 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
