Women for Bees Namibia member Gwen Lister has advised Namibians to start bee farming to create employment opportunities for themselves and earn an income, rather than waiting on the government.

Lister gave the advice while addressing an awareness and fundraising breakfast in Windhoek on Thursday, held for the organisation to network and build capacity with women in the capital.

“Bees serve an environmental purpose and they are useful to us humans. Rather than killing them, keep the bees to harvest honey and sell it to get an income or create job opportunities rather than waiting on the government,” said Lister, who is also the organisation’s capacity and local networks person.

Women for Bees Namibia is an organisation funded by Debmarine Namibia and is dedicated to training, educating and empowering women on the importance of beekeeping.

The organisation was established in 2020 and currently has 140 trained women nationwide who are beekeepers.

At the same event, another Women for Bees Namibia member, Ndawedapo Shaanika said one of the initiatives they have as an organisation is an educational component to educate people that bees are not a nuisance, but are important for food security.

The organisation, she said, is currently visiting various schools and communities nationwide to educate people about the importance of beekeeping.

The programme is for both genders but it is mostly focused on women, she said.
