Corruption is the ultimate betrayal of public trust: AR

The Affirmative Repositioning (AR) Movement’s head of legal affairs, Kavetu Maitjituavi, has said the movement takes its involvement in fighting corruption seriously because corruption is the ultimate betrayal of public trust.

Maitjituavi made these remarks on Tuesday during a media conference while addressing the matter of a Windhoek resident allegedly attempting to bribe AR’s head of elections, Paulus Kathanga, in exchange for organising a mass demonstration that would demand the release of the accused in the ‘Fishrot’ scandal.

It is alleged that Sylas Mungoba approached Kathanga and offered him N.dollars 80 000 in order for Kathanga to mobilise AR followers to demonstrate and put the judiciary under pressure to release the accused persons, who have been in custody since November 2019.

Kathanga reported the matter to the Anti-Corruption Commission, which led to the arrest of Mungoba last Friday. Mungoba appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was charged with corruptly offering gratification and defeating or obstructing the course of justice. He was denied bail and remanded in custody.

Maitjituavi said fighting corruption has been placed at the centre of AR’s struggle because corruption has been a long-standing source of distrust and anger for Namibians against politicians and other public figures. He cautioned AR members to not get involved in corrupt activities because it will not be tolerated.

“We take our involvement in fighting corruption seriously as corruption is criminal, immoral and an ultimate betrayal of public trust in the government… Our track record in terms of fighting corruption is very clear as far as both the public and private sector are concerned,” said Maitjituavi.

At the same occasion, he also commended and welcomed the decision of the Judiciary Service Commission to conduct public interviews for the ombudsman position “in line with the principles of transparency and accountability.”
