COVID-19: Namibia records 1 176 new cases, 71 deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula on Tuesday announced that Namibia recorded 1 176 new COVID-19 cases.

Shangula said Namibia also recorded 71 new COVID-19 deaths in the Rundu, Windhoek, Gobabis, Katima Mulilo, Swakopmund, Onandjokwe, Nyangana, Okahao, Outapi, Okahandja and Tsandi districts.

By Tuesday the number of confirmed cases in the country stood at 108 055 while a total number of 2 090 people have succumbed to the virus.

The Erongo Region recorded the highest number of positive cases at 208, followed by Omusati at 169, Kavango East 166, Oshana 117, Oshikoto 104, Khomas 93, Zambezi 71, Ohangwena 62, Otjozondjupa 59, Kunene 48, Hardap 27, Kavango West 20, while ||Kharas and Omaheke recorded 16 cases each.

The health minister noted that the new confirmed cases include 108 learners, 30 students, 20 teachers, 35 healthcare workers, five inmates, eight employees from the fishing industry and three from the mining industry.

“Of all the confirmed cases, 31 which is 2.6 per cent reported to have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine while seven of the new cases have been fully vaccinated,” said the minister.

The total number of active cases on Tuesday stood at 27 046, of which 552 were hospitalised with 102 in intensive care units.

Furthermore, 329 new recoveries were announced, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 78 908.

As of Tuesday, 131 677 persons had received their first dose of AstraZeneca and Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines and 30 964 had received their second doses.
