COVID-19: Namibia records 1 435 new cases, 28 deaths

Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Kalumbi Shangula on Monday said Namibia recorded 1 435 new COVID-19 cases and 28 deaths, bringing the total number of COVID-19 deaths in the country to 1 690.

He said the Windhoek district recorded the highest number of deaths with 18, while the others were recorded in Swakopmund, Opuwo, Katima Mulilo, Rehoboth, Onandjokwe and Okakarara.

The minister said the newly confirmed cases were identified from 3 939 results received from laboratories in the preceding 24 hours, representing a 36 per cent positivity ratio.

They have a gender distribution of 770 female and 665 male patients with the youngest being one month old and the oldest, 95 years.

Oshana recorded the highest number of positive cases with 258 cases followed by Erongo at 255, Khomas 228, Otjozondjupa 165, Kavango East 97, Omaheke 89, Oshikoto 68, Hardap 60, Ohangwena 58, Kunene 45, Omusati 41, Zambezi 33, ||Kharas 31 and Kavango West with seven cases.

Shangula said the cases include 216 learners, 28 teachers and 17 students. Fifty healthcare workers also tested positive for COVID-19, of which 37 are from the Oshakati district.

“Of all the confirmed cases, nine have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine,” said Shangula.

Namibia currently has 25 303 active cases, of which 506 are hospitalised with 103 being in intensive care.

Furthermore, 745 new recoveries were also announced, bringing the total number of recoveries to 71 518.

A total number of 124 586 people had received their first COVID-19 vaccine by Monday and 26 325 had received their second dose.
