COVID-19: Namibia records 1 518 new cases, three deaths

Namibia on Sunday recorded 1 518 new COVID-19 cases and three deaths, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 1 164.

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, in the daily COVID-19 update issued on Monday, said the new deaths were reported from Oshakati and Windhoek and involved three women aged between 41 and 80 years.

The newly confirmed cases were identified from 3 794 results received from laboratories and represented a 40 per cent positivity ratio.

The cases had a gender distribution of 836 females and 682 males, with the youngest being one month old and the oldest, 91 years.

The Khomas Region recorded the highest number of cases at 927; followed by Erongo with 256 cases; Hardap with 122; Otjozondjupa with 42; Oshikoto with 41; Kavango East 33; Kunene 28; //Kharas with 16 and Oshana and Omusati with 15 cases each. Ohangwena recorded 13 cases, Omaheke seven and Zambezi three.

Among the confirmed cases, 158 were learners.

“Thirty-eight students from different institutions of higher learning, 36 individuals from the education sector of which 34 are teachers and 33 health care workers have tested positive for COVID-19,” said Shangula.

He went on to say of the newly confirmed cases, 17 are recorded to have been vaccinated, mostly with the first dose and only one person had received two doses.

The country’s active cases on Sunday stood at 13 831, of which 504 were hospitalised and 76 were in intensive care units.

In addition, the health minister also announced 427 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 59 676.

A cumulative number of 104 199 people had on Sunday received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccines, while 19 865 had received their second doses.
