COVID-19: Namibia records 139 new cases and 10 deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, has announced that Namibia on Monday recorded 139 new COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths, bringing total deaths in the country to 3 833.

In the daily update issued Tuesday, Shangula said the new cases formed part of 1 263 results and represented a 11 per cent positivity ratio, with a sex distribution of 79 females and 75 males aged between one year and 102 years.

The Omusati Region recorded the highest number of cases at 60 followed by Oshana with 27 cases, Erongo 14, Kavango East seven, Oshikoto six, Khomas five, Kunene four, Kavango two, llKharas two and Ohangwena, one case.

Among the confirmed cases are 18 learners, five teachers, and five healthcare workers.

Two cases received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, 20 cases are fully vaccinated and 112, or 80.6 per cent of the new cases, are not vaccinated.

Shangula further reported that 87 new recoveries were recorded, bringing total recoveries in the country to 142 900.

The number of active cases on Monday stood at 9 870 of which 297 were hospitalised and 34 admitted to intensive care units (ICU). Two of the hospitalised cases received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 19 are fully vaccinated. All 34 cases in ICU are not vaccinated.

The minister also reported that by 16 January 2022, 411 097 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, of which 109 43 had received the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. A total of 2 832 are children aged 12 to 17 years. With 241 912 having received two doses, 350 955 people had completed their vaccination, which translates to 23.8 per cent of the target population. Meanwhile, 10 884 people have received their third Sinopharm jab.
