COVID-19: Namibia records 173 new cases and 12 deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, announced that Namibia on Friday recorded 173 new COVID-19 cases and 12 deaths, bringing total deaths in the country to 3 914.

In the daily update issued on Saturday, Shangula said the new cases formed part of 1 344 results and represented a 12.9 per cent positivity ratio, with a sex distribution of 83 females and 90 males aged between two months and 97 years.

Omusati Region recorded the highest number of cases at 60, followed by Otjozondjupa Region with 20 cases, Khomas Region 14, Oshikoto 13, Omaheke 12, Oshana 11, ||Kharas and Erongo with 10 cases each, Kavango East nine, Kavango West five, Ohangwena four, while the Kunene Region recorded 3 cases.

Among the confirmed cases are 44 learners, four teachers and five healthcare workers.

Sixteen cases are fully vaccinated, while 149 cases (86.1 per cent of the new cases) are not vaccinated.

Shangula further reported that 182 new recoveries were recorded, bringing total recoveries in the country to 144 598.

The number of active cases on Friday stood at 8 647, of which 238 were hospitalised and 29 admitted to intensive care units. Two of the hospitalised cases had received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 18 are fully vaccinated. Out of 22 cases in intensive care units two are fully vaccinated.

The minister also reported that by 20 January 2022, 414 050 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, of which 111 118 had received the single dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine. A total of 3 190 are children aged 12 to 17 years, with 243 124 people having received two doses, translating into 354 242 people having completed their vaccination, which also translates to 24.0 per cent of the target population. Meanwhile, 13 154 people have received booster doses.
