Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, on Thursday announced that Namibia had recorded 2 075 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 69 096.

The cases had a gender distribution of 911 males and 1 164 females between the ages of three days and 93 years.

Shangula said the country also recorded 33 deaths from the Gobabis, Windhoek, Swakopmund, Tsumeb, Grootfontein, Otjiwarongo, Okakarara, Mariental, Katima Mulilo, Oshikuku and Tsandi districts, taking the country’s death toll to 1 073.

The Khomas Region recorded the highest number of infections at 1 128, followed by Erongo with 169, Kavango East with 139 and Otjozondjupa with 137 cases.

Hardap recorded 126 cases, Omaheke 119, Oshana 104, ||Kharas 87, Omusati 25, Oshikoto and Zambezi each 14 cases, while Kunene had eight and Ohangwena five cases.

The country also recorded 796 new recoveries, bringing the total recoveries to 56 334.

Active cases on Wednesday evening stood at 11 678, with 400 hospitalised cases of which 84 were in intensive care units and 56 in high care.

Cumulatively, 95 467 COVID-19 vaccine first doses and 17 215 second doses were administered by Wednesday.

Shangula said noted that of the 33 deaths, only one person had received their first dose of vaccine, which he said is highly concerning.

He explained that the benefit of vaccination is that it protects a person from contracting the infection. In the event that someone contracts the infection, it will rarely lead to hospitalisation or death.

Shangula further expressed concern about false information being reported via social media regarding vaccination and called on the public to reject it as misinformation.

“We have noted with dismay that proponents of Ivermectin have resorted to falsehoods via social media to solicit support under false pretences. They assert that infections and deaths have increased following mass vaccination. There is no shred of evidence to support this narrative. I call on the public to reject such dishonesty and to avail themselves to be vaccinated,” he said.
