COVID-19: Namibia records 277 new cases and 56 new deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, has said Namibia on Tuesday recorded 277 new Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases and 56 deaths recorded from 12 districts, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 2 927.

Shangula, in the COVID-19 daily update, said the new deaths occurred between 15 and 26 July 2021.

“Four deaths occurred between 15 and 18 July, 47 between 19 and 25 July 2021 and five passed away on 26 July 2021, which is within the period under

review,” he said.

The minister added that 12 of the deaths were recorded as home deaths, of which 10 were reported from the Rundu district in the Kavango East Region.

The newly confirmed cases represented a 24 per cent

positivity ratio.

The cases had a gender distribution of 154 female and 123 male patients, with the youngest being 10 months old and the oldest 94 years.

Oshana recorded the highest number of cases at 117, followed by Khomas with 40 cases, Oshikoto 35, Zambezi 24, ||Kharas 22, Kunene 11, while

Kavango East and Otjozondjupa each recorded nine cases. Hardap recorded five cases, while Erongo and Ohangwena recorded two cases each. Omusati recorded one case.

Among the new cases, 23 are learners, two teachers, four students and eight healthcare workers from different health facilities.

“Eight of the people who tested positive have been vaccinated, and of these, two have been fully vaccinated,” said Shangula.

Namibia currently has 20 701 active cases, of which 506 are hopitalised and 79 are in intensive care units.

Additionally, 423 new recoveries were also announced, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 93 931.

A cumulative number of 154 350 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by Tuesday, while 46 344 had received their second

dose.
