COVID-19: Namibia records 36 new cases, 10 deaths

Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Kalumbi Shangula has announced that Namibia on Wednesday recorded 36 new COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 3 488.

Shangula in the daily COVID-19 update on Thursday said the new deaths were recorded in four districts.

Three of the deaths occurred in June 2021 and four in July 2021, while two occurred between 12 and 17 September 2021 and one on 21 September within the 24 hour reporting period.

According to Shangula, none of the deceased were vaccinated against COVID-19.

The minister said the newly confirmed cases were identified from 1 100 results received from laboratories, representing a 3.3 per cent positivity ratio.

The cases had a gender distribution of 23 females and 13 males, with the youngest being two months old and the oldest, 103 years.

Oshikoto recorded the highest number of positive cases at 13, followed by ||Kharas with six cases, while Kavango East and Zambezi recorded five cases each. Ohangwena recorded three cases, Otjozondjupa two and Omusati and Hardap one case each.

“Of the confirmed cases, six are learners from different schools and one of the confirmed cases received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while two received two doses,” said Shangula.

Namibia on Wednesday had 1 032 active cases of which 95 were hospitalised and 17 in intensive care units.

In addition, 261 new recoveries were announced, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 122 539.
