COVID-19: Namibia records 533 new cases, 29 deaths

Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Kalumbi Shangula announced on Friday that Namibia on Thursday recorded 533 new Coronavirus (COVID-19) positive cases out 2 0993 samples tested and 29 deaths, bringing the country’s death toll to 2 999.

Shangula, in the daily COVID-19 update, highlighted that the new deaths were recorded from eight districts – Rundu, Oshakati, Windhoek, Engela, Opuwo, Onandjokwe, Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.

Shangula said the 533 new cases comprise 298 females and 235 males between the ages of seven months and 91 years.

Erongo reported the highest number of infections at 104, followed by Khomas with 66, Omusati 56 cases, Oshana 60, Oshikoto 54, Ohangwena 50, Otjozondjupa 46, ||Kharas 43, Khomas 41, Kavango East 19, Kunene 17, Zambezi 14, Hardap 13 and Kavango West recorded the lowest number of cases at six.

Among the confirmed cases, 47 are learners, nine teachers, nine students and 23 healthcare workers. Of all confirmed cases, 30 are reported to have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while four had received two doses.

Shangula also reported 144 new recoveries, leaving the country’s active cases at 20 863. Of these cases, 447 people are hospitalised, with 77 patients admitted to intensive care units.

As of Thursday, a cumulative number of 159 881 first doses had been administered, while 48 069 people have been fully vaccinated.
