COVID-19: Namibia records 571 new cases, 30 deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula has announced that Namibia recorded 571 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday.

Shangula on Thursday said Namibia also recorded 30 new COVID-19 deaths in the Windhoek, Gobabis, Swakopmund and Oshakati districts.

By Wednesday the number of confirmed cases in the country stood at 109 356 while 2 270 people have succumbed to the virus.

The Khomas Region recorded the highest number of positive cases at 180, followed by ||Kharas at 88, Otjozondjupa 85, Oshana 67, Hardap 44, Kavango East 36, Omaheke 29, Erongo 18 and Omusati 14, while Oshikoto and Ohangwena recorded five cases each.

The health minister noted that the new confirmed cases include 32 learners, six students, four teachers and seven healthcare workers.

Of the confirmed cases 17, which is 3 per cent, were reported to have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine while five of the new cases have been fully vaccinated.

Active cases on Wednesday stood at 24 670, of which 532 were hospitalised with 97 in intensive care units.

Furthermore, 1 984 new recoveries were announced, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 82 405.

As of Wednesday, 133 863 persons had received their first dose of the AstraZeneca and Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines and 32 753 had received their second doses.
