COVID-19: Namibia records 59 new cases, four deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, has announced that Namibia on Saturday recorded 59 new COVID-19 cases and four deaths, bringing total deaths in the country to 3 967.

In the daily update on Sunday, Shangula said the new cases formed part of 761 results and represented a 7.8 per cent positivity ratio, with a sex distribution of 30 males and 29 females aged between three and 80 years.

Otjozondjupa Region recorded the highest number of cases at 20, followed by Khomas Region with nine cases, Omusati and Ohangwena recorded six cases each, Erongo five, Oshana three, Hardap and Kavango West recorded two cases each while Kavango East, Zambezi, Kunene and Oshikoto recorded one case each.

Among the confirmed cases are six learners, four students, three teachers and one healthcare worker.

Six cases are fully vaccinated, while 51 cases or 86.4 per cent of the new cases are not vaccinated.

Shangula further reported 37 new recoveries, bringing total recoveries in the country to 145 685.

The number of active cases on Saturday stood at 8 187, of which 124 were hospitalised and 12 admitted to intensive care units (ICU). Two of the hospitalised cases received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 18 are fully vaccinated. Out of 12 cases in ICU, one is fully vaccinated.

The minister also reported that by 28 January 2022, 417 403 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, of which 113 544 have received the single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. A total of 3 808 are children aged 12 to 17 years. With 245 358 people having received two doses, 358 902 people had completed their vaccination, which translates to 20.2 per cent of the target population. Meanwhile, 15 885 people have received booster doses.
