COVID-19: Namibia records 63 new cases and one death

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, has announced that Namibia on Friday recorded 63 new COVID-19 cases and one death, bringing total deaths in the country to 3 963.

In the daily update issued Saturday, Shangula said the new cases formed part of 1 572 results and represented a 4 per cent positivity ratio, with a sex distribution of 32 females and 31 males aged between two days and 92 years.

The Omusati Region recorded the highest number of cases at 15, followed by the Erongo Region with 11 cases, Khomas with 10, Omaheke and Oshana five cases each, ||Kharas four and Otjozondjupa, three cases. The Kavango East, Oshikoto, Kunene and Ohangwena recorded two cases each.

Among the confirmed cases are eight learners, three teachers and one healthcare worker.

Ten cases are fully vaccinated with one case having received a booster dose, while 50 cases or 79.4 per cent of the new cases, are not vaccinated.

Shangula further reported that 96 new recoveries were recorded, bringing total recoveries in the country to 145 648.

The number of active cases on Friday stood at 8 169, of which 132 were hospitalised and 14 admitted to intensive care units (ICU). Two of the hospitalised cases received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 18 are fully vaccinated. Out of 14 cases in ICU, two are fully vaccinated.

The minister also reported that by 27 January 2022, 417 230 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, of which 113 408 had received the single dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine. A total of 3 794 are children aged 12 to 17 years. With 421 024 people having received two doses, 358 703 people had completed their vaccination, which translates to 20.2 per cent of the target population. Meanwhile, 15 814 people have received booster doses.
