COVID-19: Namibia records 710 new cases and one death

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, has announced that Namibia on Tuesday recorded 710 new COVID-19 cases and one death, bringing total deaths in the country to 3 579.

In the daily update issued Wednesday, Shangula said the new cases formed part of 2 765 results and represented a 25.7 per cent positivity ratio, with a sex distribution of 354 males and 356 females aged between one month and 82 years.

The Khomas Region recorded the highest number of cases at 328, followed by Otjozondjupa with 144 cases, Erongo with 123 cases, ||Kharas 60, Kavango East 22, Oshana 12, Omusati nine, Kunene five and Oshikoto four, while Omaheke, Ohangwena and Hardap recorded one case each.

Among the confirmed cases are 60 learners, 16 health care workers, 14 students and eight teachers. Twenty-four cases have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 87 are fully vaccinated. A total of 599 of the new cases are unvaccinated, which constitutes 84.3 per cent.

The minister further reported that 58 new recoveries were recorded, bringing total recoveries in the country to 126 206.

The number of active cases on Tuesday increased to 4 439 of which 110 were hospitalised and 10 admitted to intensive care units. Eleven of the people in hospital are fully vaccinated, while those in ICU are not vaccinated.

Shangula reported that by Tuesday, 390 615 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine of which 95 838 had received the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. A total of 416 are children aged 12 to 17 years, while 233 250 adults had received two doses. Therefore, 329 088 people had completed their vaccination, which translates to 21.9 per cent of the target population, while 749 people have received their third Sinopharm jabs.
