Windhoek: The City of Windhoek has condemned an incident in which sewage waste was dumped at its municipal offices in Katutura on Monday morning, allegedly by a group of residents. The incident has drawn attention to ongoing concerns raised by residents in various parts of the city, particularly in the Dolam location, regarding recurring sewage leaks and blockages.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Social Activist Shaun Gariseb said in a social media post that residents have long complained about the health hazards in their community. ‘United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Six (SDG6) seeks to achieve sanitation and clean hygiene for all. The City of Windhoek subscribes to these global standards, and it flies around the world to stay abreast of these global goals. Why don’t they address this health risk for these residents in the heart of Windhoek? It’s just about priority and replacing ageing pipes and fixing drains,’ Gariseb said.

The City’s spokesperson, Harold Akwenye, in a media statement, confirmed that the matter had been promptly addressed, with a cleaning team deployed to restore the affected area. ‘The City strongly condemns such actions and will review CCTV footage and other available evidence to identify those responsible. Appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law,’ he said.

Akwenye said authorities are expected to continue their investigation into the sewage dumping incident while working to address the broader concerns related to sewer issues across the city. ‘The City can confirm that our technical teams continuously monitor and attend to reported sewer blockages and overflows across the city, including in Dolam. We encourage residents to report such incidents through the City’s official communication channels to ensure timely response and resolution,’ he added.

Akwenye assured the public that the City remains committed to maintaining public health, safety, and environmental hygiene. ‘We urge residents to engage with us constructively as we work together to address service delivery challenges,’ he concluded.
