A new Windhoek municipal council management committee (MC) was elected on Tuesday night, following a failed attempt by former MC members of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) to block the process through an urgent court application.

The new MC was elected at a special council meeting after the Windhoek High Court dismissed an urgent application on Monday by four former MC members to stop a motion of no confidence in the committee.

The fifth MC member was Landless People’s Movement (LPM) politician Ivan Skrywer, who did not form part for the legal battle.

The motion was invoked by Affirmative Repositioning (AR) councillor Ilse Keister in July 2022.

She accused the former MC of gross incompetence and exposing of the council to external forces.

She also accused the MC of failing to inspire confidence among Windhoek residents.

On Monday, her motion succeeded to remove the IPC quartet Ndeshihafela Larandja, Jürgen Hecht, Ben Araeb, Otillie Uukule and LPM’s Skrywer.

They were replaced by Swapo’s Sam Nujoma and Austin Kwenani, Popular Democratic Movement’s Clemencia Hanases, Keister and Skrywer, the only surviving member from the previous MC.
