Customs official arrested for smuggling goods into Namibia

An official of customs-based in Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi region was arrested today (Sunday) for smuggling goods into the country through illegal entry points from Zambia, Namibian Police regional commander, Commissioner Karel Theron said.

In an interview with Nampa on Sunday, Theron said that the suspect brought in goods including alcohol through ungusseted entry points and was arrested after a tip-off by the members of the public.

Alcohol was amongst goods that were smuggled in believed to be sold to Namibians while the State of Emergency prohibits the sale of alcohol.

“The suspect is now in police custody and a case of illegal smuggling of goods into the country was opened according to the Customs Act. The suspect was not arrested for possession of alcohol like reported in some other media and social media but for smuggling of goods into the country,” he said.

The suspect was arrested at his house after a tip-off by the members of the public, said Theron.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Katima Mulilo magistrate’s court on Tuesday.

Police investigations into the matter continue.
