Inspector General of the Namibian Police Force, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo on Tuesday announced that drugs valued over N.dollars 41 million were seized in Namibia during the 2021/22 financial year.

Shikongo said this during a media briefing for the commemoration of the 32nd anniversary of the Namibian Police Force that was held here.

The Namibian Police chief said that drugs estimated at a street value of N.dollars 41 million were seized and he, therefore, called on the public to help the police in lowering crime rates.

“The police cannot reduce crime on its own, so we need community engagement to assist the police in reducing crime in the country,” Shikongo said.

He added that 98 640 crimes were reported in the financial year 2021/22, a 7 per cent increase from the previous financial year.

“Despite the prevalence of crime, the Namibian Police Force also recorded several successes during the same financial year, which also contributed to the number of crimes recorded. These include the detection and seizure of various types of illicit drugs,” he said adding that the police also intercepted several trafficking in-person syndicates.

Shikongo said that some of these crimes are categorised crimes, which can only be detected when the police strategies are effective enough.

“The highest crimes were reported in the Khomas, Oshana, and Otjozondjupa regions. Kavango West recorded the lowest crimes,” he said.
