Namibia’s men’s national development side, the Eagles, lost their opening match of the 2022 Global Namibia Twenty-Twenty (T-20) opening match by 18 runs against South Africa’s DP World Lions at the Wanderers Cricket Grounds on Thursday.
The Lions won the toss and elected to bat scoring 184 runs for the fall of four wickets (184/4) in their allocated 20 overs.
Proteas T20 star Reeza Hendricks was named man of the match after smashing 77 runs off 42 balls scoring five fours and six sixes.
He was ably assisted by Cameron Delport who scored 42 runs from 34 balls, while Temba Bavuma scored 23 runs from 20 balls.
In reply, Namibia managed to score 165/6 in 20 overs with Jan Frylinck notching 52 runs not out from 28 balls.
The other top scorer for Namibia was Nicol Loftie-Eaton who hit 34 runs from 23 balls.
In terms of bowling, Ruben Trumpelmann took two wickets for 44 runs from four overs, with Ben Shikongo and Jan Frylinck taking a wicket each.
Speaking after the match, captain Merwe Erasmus said the team played decent cricket in patches which were not good enough to win the match.
“The conditions were fair and the field had lots of runs which was good for the spectators. It was good to see Jan Frylinck scoring huge runs as we prepare for the upcoming world cup,” he said.
Namibia next plays Pakistan’s Lahore Qalanders on Friday before playing them again on Saturday afternoon.
Lions and Qalanders will face each other on Saturday morning.
