ECN kicks off with candidate nomination process for November elections

The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) on Tuesday announced that the commission has finalised preparations of the nomination process of candidates for the forthcoming Regional Council and Local Authority elections.

A media statement issued by ECN Chief Electoral and Referenda Officer, Theo Mujuro, on Tuesday said the period of submission of candidates for the elections commenced on Tuesday, 29 September 2020 and will be concluded on 16 October 2020.

“Returning officers in the 121 constituencies and 57 local authority areas [will] receive the submissions for candidates and party lists for a member of the Regional Council and the members of a Local Authority as per the proclamations by the President of the Republic of Namibia in Government Gazette no. 7345 of 2020,” Mujoro said.

He informed that the last date for submission of nomination of candidates in the case of independent candidates is 14 October 2020.

Furthermore, Mujoro said the provisional voters’ registration for the forthcoming elections will be displayed for inspection and lodging of objections from Wednesday, 30 September 2020 to 05 October 2020 at designated areas across the country as required by the Electoral Act 5 of 2014.

He added that the objections must be lodged with electoral tribunals designated for the given magisterial geographical area.

“Registered voters, registered political parties and political organisations may lodge an objection in writing to the inclusion or non-inclusion of any name in the provisional voter’s register,” he said.

Mujoro explained that an objection can be against a person who is not entitled by or under Section 22 of the Electoral Act to be registered as a voter, or is not complying with the requirements in relation to residence as contemplated in the same section.

The Regional Council and Local Authority elections are slated for 25 November 2020.
