The police in Swakopmund on Tuesday arrested three men suspected of assaulting and attempting to rob an elderly couple in Swakopmund.

A crime report issued by Namibian Police Force Erongo Community Affairs commander, Inspector Ileni Shapumba on Tuesday stated that the couple was attacked at their residence in Ocean View by the three men who forcefully entered their home at around 08h00.

It is alleged that the three attacked the 67-year-old man and overpowered him. They assaulted him with fists and a panga, while restraining his wife and demanding money and keys to a safe.

“The victim’s wife was busy attending a fitness training session online when the men entered their home, other participants observed the incident and immediately notified members of their neighbourhood watch, who together with Namibian Police members, responded promptly and arrested the three suspects,” Shapumba noted.

The victim (man) was taken to Cottage Private Hospital for treatment, where he is reported to be in stable condition.

“We applaud the online training participants for their vigilance and prompt action in reporting the matter. This commendable effort is worth emulating. We also applaud everyone’s response for an excellent coordination that led to the successful arrest of the robbers,” said Shapumba.

Investigations continue.
