Elephant tramples man to death in Kavango East

WINDHOEK: The Police in Mukwe opened a docket of inquest after a 24 year old man was trampled to death by an elephant on Friday. The incident took place at Kahanga village in the Mukwe Constituency in Kavango East Region at about 20h15. The deceased, Muyenga Shamwaka was walking home together with a friend from a nearby bar. They decided to take a short cut and came across the elephant that chased them. The friend manage to run away unhurt. The next of kin was informed.

In another incident, the Police in Opuwo is investigating an attempted murder case after a 29 year-old man was stabbed with a knife in his head and sustained serious injuries. The incident took place on Saturday at about 23h30 at the Okarunga Bar. The victim allegedly alerted a friend not to go outside as he overheard some people planned to beat him up. The suspect took a knife and stabbed the victim. The victim was admitted at the Opuwo State Hospital and is in a stable condition. The suspect was arrested. Police investigation continues.

In Omusati Region between Iipundi and Etumba Cattle Posts in the Tsandi Constituency, a skeleton of an adult male was found in the bushes by a cattle herder on Friday at unknown time. The cause of death is not yet established and the deceased is not yet know. He was wearing a brown T-shirt with white stripes, brown trousers and blue and white Adidas slippers.

The skeleton was taken to the Okahao Police Mortuary. Police investigations continue.

In another incident, the Police in Rundu is investigating an attempted murder case after Mathias Haufiku (22) was stabbed three times in the abdomen and wounded. The incident took place at about 18H00 on Thursday at the Mutwegombahe village in the Kavango East. An argument erupted over a horse that the deceased borrowed from the suspect and brought it back late. The victim was admitted at the Rundu State Hospital and is in a critical condition. The suspect was not yet arrested. Police investigation continues.

Inspector Stephan Nuuyi of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Public Relations Division said during the weekly police media briefing on Sunday the two came across the elephant and it started to chase them.

The friend manage to run away unhurt.

The deceased’s next of kin have been informed.

In a separate incident, the Police in Opuwo are investigating a case of attempted murder after a 29-year-old man was stabbed with a knife in his head on Saturday at about 23h30 at the Okarunga Bar.

The victim was admitted to the Opuwo District Hospital and is in a stable condition. The suspect was arrested, and police investigations continue.
