Elias and Mohammed are new junior squash champs

WINDHOEK: Peru’s Diego Elias and Habiba Mohammed of Egypt are the new World Junior Squash (WJS) men’s and women’s champions, respectively.

They were crowned on Friday at the end of the championships held here since 10 August. All Namibian players were knocked out of the championships in the Round of 32.

In a statement availed to Nampa on Saturday, event organisers said Elias overcame Omar El Atmas in 11-3 11-2 11-1, while Mohammed beat Nouran Gohar, also from Egypt, in 6-11 11-2 11-7 11-6.

Elias was quoted in the statement as saying, the win was a wonderful victory and was not as difficult as the semi-finals.

He reckons he got the victory because his competitor ‘was tired’. A dejected El Atmas admitted that he was tired, saying he had a tough few days, but unfortunately ‘it’s the nature of the sport and I tried to hang in there’.

“Diego is a class-player, and I knew I was going to have a very difficult game. I would like to congratulate him on the win,” he added.

Mohammed, who has been at the receiving end of a few warnings for wasting time, said she is setting her sights on future tournaments.

When asked about whether it was a tactic to slow down her opponent as she was consistently tying-up her shoe laces and cleaning her protective glasses, Mohammed said it was part of the game and she could not do anything about that.

Other results are: Jean-Pierre van der Merwe (South Africa) defeated Oisin Logan (Ireland) to win the Consolation Plate in 10-12 13-11 6-11 11-9 13-11.

In the Super Plate final, David Baillargeon (Canada) defeated Jami Äijänen (Finland) in 11-8 11-6 11-7, and in the Plate final Daniel Poleshchuk (Israel) defeated James Peach (England 11-7 8-11 11-5 11-8.

Meanwhile, the team events kicked off on Saturday. The championships will come to an end on 22 August.
