Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism is investigating how a number of goats at Otuwala village in the Oshana Region were injured and killed on Sunday.

The owner of the animals, Immanuel Antonio, reported that five of his goats and a dog were found dead in a kraal on Sunday, while six others were found unconscious. The village is situated three kilometres outside Oshakati.

Video clips of the dead animals have circulated online since, with many speculating that the animals were killed by “unknown animals.”

Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism spokesperson Romeo Muyunda on Monday said they have officials on the ground who have to establish the exact cause of death, particularly whether a wild animal was involved or not.

“If they were killed by wild animals, we have to identify the type of the predator, where it came from and how the ministry can assist the community moving forward,” Muyunda said.

Otuwala village headman, Ruben David, in an interview with Nampa said it appeared as if the blood of six of the goats was ‘drained.’

“The whole herd of goats will not survive as they were left in a devastated state,” David said.

An official of the ministry, who asked not to be named, said they were busy tracking the animals thought to have killed the goats.

He ruled out lions as the tracks found do not match that of a lion.
