Erongo Region Governor Neville Andre Itope launched the Erongo COVID-19 Vaccination Campaign here on Tuesday.

The campaign is aimed at raising awareness amongst community members who have not yet been vaccinated, those unable to access the vaccines and those who are not well informed on vaccination.

Itope during a media briefing said a substantial percentage of young people have not been vaccinated yet and therefore, the campaign also targets them.

“With COVID-19 even young people will suffer illnesses and some will have long-term health impacts as a consequence. In terms of the uptake of the COVID -19 vaccine, the region has observed a relatively slow uptake. Currently on average, we vaccinated 400 people in a day and we would like to push this to 1 000,”the governor noted.

So far, about 11 992 people in Erongo from the targeted amount of 121 000 have been vaccinated with the first COVID-19 dose, while 1 998 people have received their second dose.

The governor also said a task force is establishing additional fixed and mobile vaccine points in the region and 16 sites have so far been identified.

This should make it easier for people to get vaccinated.

“We would also want to visit high risk individuals, such as the elderly and also look at setting up points at old age homes and have our vaccination teams at these places,” Itope noted.

The Erongo Region has received 16 192 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine, which includes 6 852 for the Walvis Bay district, 6 066 for Swakopmund, 1 650 for Omaruru and 1 624 for the Usakos district respectively.
