Eswatini takes over chairmanship of SACU

The Kingdom of Eswatini has taken over the Chairmanship of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) from the Republic of Botswana on Friday.

According to SACU’s Executive Secretary Paulina Elago in a media statement, the Kingdom of Eswatini will serve in that position until 14 July 2023.

She said the SACU chairmanship rotates among member states for a period of 12 months in alphabetical order.

‘King Mswati III of the Kingdom of Eswatini will assume the role of the chairperson of the SACU summit taking over from President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana,’ she said.

The Minister of Finance of Eswatini Neal Rijkenberg will assume the role of chairperson of the SACU Council of ministers taking over from the Minister of Finance of Botswana Peggy O Serame.

Elago further noted that the principal secretary in the Ministry of Finance of Eswatini Sizakele Dlamini takes over as chairperson of the SACU commission from the secretary for economic and financial policy in the Ministry of Finance of Botswana Kelapile Ndobano.

Furthermore, she said the principal secretary in the Ministry of Finance of Lesotho Nthoateng Lebona will be the chairperson of the finance and audit committee taking over from the principal secretary in the Ministry of Finance of Eswatini Sizakele Dlamini.

The SACU consists of Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini.
