Cabinet on Wednesday approved the process that will see the remains of several liberation struggle martyrs across the country exhumed and reburied at special, selected burial sites to be agreed upon by Government and family members.

A media statement issued to Nampa on Thursday indicates that the approval was granted to the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs on Wednesday at the 13th Cabinet decision-making meeting which took place in Windhoek.

The submission to start the exhumation and re-interment of the remains of the liberation struggle martyrs was made by the same ministry.

“The Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, who is the chairperson of the high level committee on the matter, should therefore embark on a nationwide exhumation and re-interment of remains of Namibia’s liberation struggle martyrs and should work with the assistance of the technical committee on the matter,” reads the statement.

Cabinet further authorised the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs to continue in making budgetary provision and informed in-depth analysis of the costs and financial implications related to the subject under discussion until all its processes are completed across the country within the shortest possible timeframe.

At the moment, it is still not clear how many remains of liberation struggle heroes and heroines will be exhumed, at which cemetery, and where the remains will be reburied.

However, Cabinet on Wednesday also directed the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture to consider constructing a national shrine at the current historical burial sites situated in the Kunene Region.
