Farmworkers arrested for murder of alleged poacher denied bail

Four farmworkers arrested on Tuesday in connection with the death of a suspected poacher on Farm Doorling Laagte in the Otjiwarongo District, were on Wednesday denied bail and remanded in custody.

Likius Jackson, 30; Tjakaranai Tjambiru, 24; Jacob Angula, 31; and 54-year-old Joseph Ipuleni Sheya appeared before Otjiwarongo Magistrate Karel Muyeghu on charges of murder and attempted murder.

During their appearance, Muyeghu informed the accused of their legal right to engage the services of a private lawyer of their choice; apply for a State-funded lawyer through the Ministry of Justice’s Legal Aid Directorate, or defend themselves in court.

All four accused opted to engage a private lawyer and their case was postponed to 22 November 2021 for further investigations.

Public prosecutor Toini Amutitu represented the State.

It is alleged that the four workers, who were taking care of the farm, on Tuesday spotted two unknown men roaming on the farm and assumed they were poachers.

When they caught the two suspects around 16h00 they tied them up and while questioning them, allegedly hit them with sticks.

One victim allegedly succumbed to his injuries on the farm, while the other was injured and later admitted to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital in serious condition.
