Favourites Take Top Spots at Opening Fistball Tournament

CHAMPIONSHIP favourites, SKW 1 and Cohen FC 3, took the lead in the Bank Windhoek National Fistball A and B Leagues respectively in the first league meeting which took place on Saturday at the SFC Sport Club in Swakopmund.

Defending champions, SKW 1, had a bad start to their campaign in the Bank Windhoek National Fistball A League when they suffered a shock 4-3 defeat against club mates SKW 2 who played with only four players.

SKW 1 regrouped later in the day by winning 4-1 against both Cohen FC 2 and SFC Sport Club. Thanks to their narrow 4-3 win against Cohen FC 1 in the last game of the day, SKW 1 managed to take first place on the log.

SKW 2 gave a good performance throughout the day, thanks to their inspirational captain, Christoph Kubirske, who was also named Danric Auto Player of the Day. The team ended the day in third place on the log behind Cohen FC 1 who finished second.

The local team of the SFC Sport Club did not have a good day, because, although they won their game against Cohen FC 2 in straight sets, they did not manage to show their true potential in any of their other games.

Cohen FC 3 have their sights set on the next piece of silverware in the National B League. After winning the season opening tournament three weeks ago, the team led by former Namibian international, Wilfried Hacker, showed impeccable form on Saturday and won all their matches without dropping a set.

They now have an impressive six point lead ahead of second placed, SFC 2. DTS are in third position on the log after winning their matches against SKW 3 and Cohen FC 4. They will however be tested at the next league meeting when they will have to play against, amongst others, SFC 2.

The next Bank Windhoek National Fistball League meeting will be played in Windhoek on 5 April 2014. This will also be the last time that the U18 national team players will be in action before they depart to Brazil. The team will participate at the U18 World Championships where they will meet teams such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Argentina, Chile and the host country, Brazil.
