Female inmate kills boy in Wanaheda holding cells

WINDHOEK: A fight between two female prisoners in the Wanaheda Police holding cells on Thursday led to the death of a four year old boy, who was locked up with his mother.

Inspector Stephan Nuuyi of the Namibian Police Public Relations Division told a media briefing on Sunday that the incident took place between 14h00 and 15h00. The boy died at the Katutura State Hospital at about 19h45 the same day after his head was smashed twice on the floor and sustained serious head injuries.

The mother of the deceased was in custody for shoplifting after she failed to pay bail of N.dollars 500. The suspect was in custody for assault to cause grievous bodily harm and no bail was granted to her. She was also removed from the female cell to the visitor’s cell to prevent her to cause any harm to other prisoners.

Police investigations continue.

In another incident on Thursday, two suspects grabbed a 23 year old man and robbed him of a Samsung laptop, an Apple Ipad, Samsung cellphone and laptop bag at 11h00 in Naguil Street in Khomasdal.

The items are valued at N.dollars 16 170.00 and no recovery or arrest was made yet. Police investigations continue.

The Katutura Police is investigating a case of robbery after two suspects with a tyre and a rim tried to sell the items to an off-duty Police officer. The incident took place on Thursday at about 22h30 in Damara Location in Katutura. The officer questioned the two man aged 19 and 22 years about the items and then pulled out knives and threatened and demand money and a cellphone from the officer. The officer was then injured between the legs before he could pulled out his pistol and shot one of the suspects in the right shoulder and the other suspect in the left thigh. Both suspects were arrested with the help of the City Police and admitted at the Katutura State Hospital. Police investigations continue.

In an unrelated incident in the Omaheke Region, four suspects, aged 25, 32, 37 and 49 years, were arrested after they were found in possession of game meat valued at N.dollars 29 846. The incident took place on Thursday at about 21h00 on the Gobabis/Drimiopsis road.

It is alleged that the suspects hunted illegally two elands and three blue wild beasts. Police investigations continue.
