A fire erupted on the Northern outskirts of Windhoek on Tuesday after a TransNamib train carrying nine fuel tankers derailed.

City of Windhoek Corporate Communications and Marketing Officer, Lydia Amutenya, said although information relating to the cause of the derailment is still sketchy, a report from the Emergency Service team that was at the scene indicates that nine tanks carrying fuel products were involved, of which seven were carrying jet fuel and two were carrying diesel for TransNamib.

‘Due to the seriousness of the fire and high flames, the fire fighting team could not start extinguishing the fire right away for safety reasons. They first had to observe the amount of liquid that was burning and when the flames lowered a little bit, that is when they started extinguishing the fire,’ said Amutenya, adding that the fire was eventually extinguished and that no fatalities were immediately reported.
