Five die in plane crash

WINDHOEK: Five people died in a medical evacuation aircraft accident after an mercy flight with five people on board from Oranjemund crashed shortly before landing in Cape Town.

According to Bertus Struwig from E-Med rescue 24 , to whom the aircraft belongs, the aircraft went down shortly before landing.

The mercy flight left Windhoek for Oranjemund at 02h00 and landed shortly before 04h00 at that town. It then took off with the 80 year old patient his daughter, a medic and the two pilots shortly after 04h00 Struwig told this reporter. It was around 06h00 when the South African authorities contacted the E-Med Rescue 24 offices saying they lost contact with the pilots.

‘It was then that we mobilized the Search and Rescue unit from Cape Town and shortly after 07h00 they confirmed they found the wreck of the aircraft. ‘ Struwig told this agency.

Meanwhile the Premier of the Western Cape and former leader of the SA opposition party Democratic Alliance (DA), Helen Zille tweeted that the wreck was found in Tygerberg nature reserve.

The circumstances are still unclear of what caused the accident but according to SA News 24 the radar network was off and could not communicate with the pilots of the doomed aircraft.

It crashed about 7 miles from the airport.

Meanwhile Terrance Ward, the father of the medic, Alfred John, 23, who passed away in the accident told this reporter in a telephone interview that his son had a passion for his profession to help other in a medical situation.

The rest of the names are still withheld until their next of kin have been informed about the accident.
