Former Nanso leaders deny Taapopi’s claims

Former Namibian National Students' Organisation (Nanso) vice president Maitjituavi Kavetu and president Dimbulukeni Nauyoma correct current secretary general, Simon Taapopion on his claims that the organisation had no email address and offices.

In an interview with Nampa on Wednesday, Kavetu denied Taapopi's claims that the organisation did not have an email address when Taapopi, who was the time Nanso chief administrator at the time, was in charge of it and added that they had an office at the newly built National Youth Council (NYC) building.

I fail to understand how Simon Taapopi concluded that that previous leadership did not have an office at that time. Taapopi is aware that we had an office at the NYC building but after the general student congress, when our term started in 2015, we came to find our furniture, office files and stationery in the NYC corridor. Those allegations are false, Kavetu explained.

Former Nanso president, Dimbulukeni Nauyoma concurred with Kavetu saying Taapopi used an official Nanso email address to communicate with students and urged the current leadership to focus on carrying out their mandate which the students give instead of comparing with previous leaders.

Under our leadership in Nanso, I do not know which email he was using to communicate with the students and some of these unfounded claims. However, I am not interested in who is doing better or worse because what is the measure are we using, Nauyoma said.

He added that each leadership carries out its functionalities that it wants to achieve and the weight of the student populus will not lie in terms of that leadership's achievements.

You cannot call cosmetic issues a success because what is the function of the organisation? Is it to have an office or to serve the interest of the students? The purpose of these things are important, Nauyoma said.

Kavetu and Nauyoma served as vice president from 2015 to 2017 while Taapopi was the chief administrator.

This comes after Taapopi claimed that the current leadership is more progressive compared to the organisation's previous leaderships since the student body's establishment in 1984.

Taapopi made this statement in response to media questions regarding the rife infightings within the current leadership during a media conference here on Wednesday.

This Nanso of today is different from the other Nanso. Before this leadership, Nanso was a briefcase leadership (where) somebody would carry a laptop and say 'we are Nanso', Taapopi said.
