Four people perish in car accident outside Otjiwarongo

OTJIWARONGO; Three children and adult man died on Saturday afternoon after the Mercedes Benz vehicle they were travelling in overturned on the B1 road outside Otjiwarongo.

The accident occurred approximately 36 kilometres from Otjiwarongo towards Otavi at about 17h20.

The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Otjozondjupa Regional Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Maureen Mbeha told Nampa on Sunday that the driver might have lost control over the vehicle after it had a right-rear tyre burst.

“We suspect the vehicle was speeding, as it left the road, rolled several times and came to a halt approximately 900 metres away from the spot where it left the road,” she said.

The three minor children have been identified as Emily Amakali, 05; Megameno Amakali, 12; and nine-year-old Esther Ndilimeke. They died on the spot.

The driver, Heiki Amakali, 31, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Otjiwarongo State Hospital on the same day.

The deceased’s next of kin have already been informed. Other passengers – Tyron Ulamba, 26, and Selma Nipuma, 12 – sustained injuries and were admitted to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital in a stable condition.

It is suspected the vehicle was travelling to Ondangwa. Police investigations continue.
