French couple robbed along the Trans-Caprivi Highway

A case of robbery was lodged at the Rundu police station on Wednesday after two tourists travelling along the Trans- Caprivi highway were robbed at Kambowo village on Thursday morning.

Kambowo village is situated about 15 kilometres east of Rundu.

According to Kavango East police crime investigations coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Bonifasius Kanyetu, the tourists (a French couple), were driving from Rundu going to the east when the incident happened.

He said the couple were robbed after the suspect pretended to hike them and when they stopped, he then grabbed the car keys and smashed the vehicle and took off with two bags, one mobile phone and cash valued at N.dollars 75 000.

The suspect hiked the toursists and aggressively grabbed the car keys and smashed the vehicle. Two windows were damaged and they stole bags of the complainant including an iPhone, all valued at N.dollars 90 000, Kanyetu said.

He added that investigations are still ongoing because they suspect that three people are involved in the robbery saying that the couple could have been followed from Rundu since one of the suspects was arrested later and an amount of 900 EURO was recovered and N.dollars 4890 which the suspect got from exchanging 300 EURO at a local supermarket.

A 33-year-old man was arrested was later after he exchanged 300 EURO at a local supermarket.

Kanyetu said an iphone was recovered including 900 EURO's and Ndollars 4890 which the sucpect got from exchanging the EURO's.

Investigations into the matter continue as we try to apprehend the other remaining suspects, he said .

Asked about the wellbeing of the victims, the crime investigations coordinator said the couple is well and they are currently receiving councelling for the trauma they have gone through while awaiting for their rented vehicle to be repaired.
