President Hage Geingob has joined the world in the commemoration of International Workers’ Day, saying Namibians should forge ahead with renewed commitment and work together in building a fair, equitable and safe post COVID-19 recovery Namibian house.

01 May is an international unity and solidarity celebration for workers which was proclaimed in 1889 by the first international congress of socialist parties in Paris, France.

In his media statement issued by the Office of the Presidency on Sunday, Geingob said a day of remembrance of workers is an important achievement in the fight by workers in recognition of their contributions to society and socio- economic development, noting that the Namibian government recognises the fact that the day signifies awareness about some of the difficulties faced by workers in the collective endeavor to improve their working conditions.

Geingob said since independence, the government has been committed to the advancement of Namibian workers by putting in place several interventions to guarantee fairness, protect their safety and improve their working conditions, adding that although significant progress has been made in these areas, there is still much left to be done.

“Our fight for independence was accelerated by the struggles of workers against the exploitative and unjust colonial regime. Therefore, conscious of that history, the Namibian government will always be on the side of workers.

The rights of workers in Namibia are a fundamental right guaranteed and protected by the Constitution. All Namibians irrespective of sex, race, colour, religion, and ethnicity can engage in any employment of their interest,” he noted.

The President also acknowledged the efforts of frontline workers, men and women in uniform, who during the COVID-19 pandemic risked their lives to save those of others. He further commended all those whose efforts continue to advance the rights of workers and advocate for workers’ welfare.
