President Hage Geingob has joined other world leaders in participating in the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP27) taking place in Egypt.

The conference, which started in Sharm El-Sheikh on Monday, will focus on adaptation, implementation and finance as ways to achieve zero-carbon development and effective adaptation to climate change.

According to a media release issued by the presidency on Monday, the goal of COP27 is to build on past successes and pave the way for ambitious plans to tackle climate change in the future.

“President Geingob’s invitation by the Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, to COP27 emphasises the importance of world leaders implementing and transforming key climate-related decisions, building on previous conferences of parties’ outcomes, including Glasgow COP26. COP27 also provides opportunities for all stakeholders to rise to the occasion and effectively address the global challenges of climate change on the African continent,” the statement reads.

On the margins of COP27, Geingob will attend the African leaders’ event on ‘Accelerating Adaption in Africa’ at the invitation of Senegalese President and Chair of the African Union, Macky Sall. He will also take part in a panel discussion called ‘Building Partnerships in Green Hydrogen’, which is led by Belgian and Egyptian Prime Ministers Alexander De Croo and Mostafa Madbouly.

President Geingob will in addition deliver the national statement on COP27, after which he will participate in the signing of ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding between Namibia and the European Union on sustainable raw material value chains and renewable hydrogen, among other events.
