President Hage Geingob is scheduled to attend the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Monday, 19 September 2022.

The queen will be laid to rest at Westminster Abbey after lying in state for four days to allow the public to pay their respects.

Geingob confirmed his attendance during a courtesy visit by the British High Commissioner to Namibia, Charles Moore, to State House on Tuesday. The president indicated that he is attending the funeral while en route to the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), scheduled for 13 to 27 September 2022 in New York in the United States of America.

Geingob is expected to address the UN General Assembly on 21 September 2022.

“I have to attend her funeral. I met the queen five times. When she came here in 1991, while accompanying her to Katutura, we discussed the education system, and the last time we engaged was during a courtesy call by the queen,” said Geingob.

The president will also depart for Angola on Wednesday to participate in the swearing in of Angolan President Joao Lourenco for a second term on 15 September 2022. While in Angola, he will lay a wreath at the gravesite of former President Jose Eduardo dos Santos as he could not attend Dos Santos’s funeral in Luanda in August.

The 77th UNGA will see world leaders discuss some of the biggest global challenges and drive progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
